In the final decade of the Eighteenth Century, the Kingdom of France, its people suffering severe poverty because of the overwhelming financial woes of the country, as well as discriminatory treatment of the underclasses, broke out in violent revolution. At first taking their cue from the previous struggle of the then fledgling United States, the rebellion soon degenerated.
The initial violence began to feed upon itself and bloody revolution spread across all of France. Surprisingly, the struggle spread into neighboring countries.
Early in 1793, Great Britain and Republican France went to war. This lasted, with a pair of short interruptions, until 1815.
For much of this war, Britain strained at every seam to prevent French forces from crossing the Channel. For much of the war, the Royal Navy was the bulwark that prevented invasion, just as it did a century and a half in the future.
Our fictional Royal Naval officer in this book is representative of those larger than life figures that saved the British Isles from conquest.

Richard Testrake provides an excellent look into the life of a young man becoming a man on the high seas in His Majesty's Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The research was excellent. The editing was likewise excellent. The book made one think he took it from a log book or at least a diary as it examines both his personal life and the life aboard ship. BRAVO! There is a significant follow-on question. When's the next one coming off the ways? Please keep them coming. Hopefully, the publisher is on board and not left standing on the cliffs at Dover. Excellent read.Product details

On the King Sea Service A John Phillips Novel War at Sea Book 1 eBook Richard Testrake Reviews
Not the great epic novel but a good read and made you want to keep reading
Well written and historically accurate. I good picture of the 18th century Royal Navy
An excellent seafaring novel. I am fed up with reviewers who brag about their background and their own expertees and find fault and nitpick age of sail novels These are works of fiction - get over it.
This book could do with a good editor. I have read the whole series and enjoyed them all.
The character developed well, though more interaction would have helped. Basic, enjoyable, somewhat realistic balance of luck and skill. Will read the next one
The editing is appallingly bad, and the author loses track of his plot from time to time, but the story is enjoyable -- even though unnecessary time must be spent figuring out where quote marks and commas really SHOULD be inserted. The author appears to be knowledgeable of the period and the seafaring life.
While not Nobel Literature prize standard, this is a good, solid workmanlike tale of the Napoleonic Royal Navy. Some more character development would have been nice
I'm only slowly warming to this writer. While the story detail seems accurate to the period the characters feel a bit flat. We're not let inside their heads to learn what they are thinking and feeling--the reader hasn't the opportunity to hear their thoughts. Very little dialog in the opening chapters; mostly just a recitation of details. I'm hoping future installments may take us more deeply into the characters.
